Gymnastics Training Article: Injuries... What a Pain!
Many great gymnastics coaches produce high level gymnasts with very few injuries. How do they do it? The secret to keeping the injuries to a minimum is two fold. First, follow the USAG safety guidelines for risk management. And secondly, listen to your gymnasts. The general rule of thumb is “don’t do anything that hurts.” Sounds simple, but it is very effective with avoiding overuse injuries.
Performing any gymnastic skill or exercise repeatedly when there is pain will only intensify the pain and damage. With that pain increasing and the gymnastic injury becoming more severe the healing time will increase. If the healing time increases everyone is frustrated, gymnast, gymnastic coach, and parent.
Remember, when a gymnast is in pain you must allow the gymnast to stop performing the gymnastic skills, drills, or conditioning exercises that cause the pain. Next, allow the gymnast to ice and elevate the area that hurts. Please keep in mind that it is unethical to force a gymnast to perform any gymnastic skill, gymnastic drill, or gymnastic conditioning exercise that causes pain or damage. Depending upon the level and severity of the pain, the gymnast may need to visit a doctor immediately.
I am not stating that every coach must overreact to gymnastic injuries and pain, but none of us have x-ray vision. Each gymnast has a different level of tolerance to pain so we must get them checked sooner rather than later. When the gymnast does visit their doctor everyone must follow the doctor’s advice. Ask the parent to get a specific list of “do’s” and don’ts” so that you can proceed with training around the injury as long as the doctor allows. When I say train around the injury I mean perform alternate gymnastic skills, gymnastic drills, or gymnastic conditioning exercises that do not require the injured area to be used.
Many gymnasts are very successful with training around the injury. We must focus on what the gymnast CAN do rather than what the gymnast CANNOT do while following the doctor’s instructions. It is really amazing how much an athlete can accomplish, even with an injury. By this point you must be thinking I have two different opinions on injuries, see a doctor, but continue training.
Let me explain what training around an injury involves. If the injured area is the ankle you must prevent the gymnast from walking, running, jumping, dismounting, or doing anything that causes pain. Let’s focus on the positive.
