Gymnastics Training Article: Leg Strength... Remember when nearly every gymnast was performing sticking drills as part of their training for vaulting? What ever happened to that useful exercise? It was sport specific and it helped develop eccentric strength. (Ask me how to teach the advanced version of that exercise for your competitive gymnasts.) Eccentric strength is extremely important for the gymnast, especially for dismounts. When the gymnast is landing from a skill, such as a double back, she is dealing with a force that can be ten-thirteen times her body weight. Eccentric strength is the ability to stop the force upon foot contact with the floor. It is how gymnasts are able to stick their landings without collapsing. The gymnast MUST train for that in order to reduce her risk of being injured.
