The Elbow Stability article discusses hyper-extended elbows, elbow injuries, and it includes strength exercises for biceps, triceps, forearms, wrists.
The Shoulder Stability article discusses shoulder injures and includes exercises for the rotator cuff muscles.

Why did Karen Goeller write her first book? Karen Goeller was involved in an accident in 2000 and suffered permanent spinal damage. (It was not a gymnastics-related accident.) She stopped coaching gymnastics as she knew it and left her advertising job with Gold's Gym. Desperate to remain involved in gymnastics and fitness, Karen turned to writing. "I felt like I had a ton of information in my head that was not being used." Goeller then compared the knowledge in her head to "an expensive item in your house that just collects dust because no one is using it." Goeller: Get screened for skin cancer... Melanoma is an epidemic. One person
dies every hour from melanoma. Almost 70,000 Americans will be
diagnosed and 8,700 will die from the disease this year. This cancer starts out
on the skin, but can spread throughout the body if not removed quickly. It is
called MALIGNANT Melanoma for a reason... I literally almost died
of this cancer in 1991. To give an example of why people do not take this
seriously, the mole on my leg was just under 1/4 inch in diameter. I thought it
was a simple office procedure so I put it off for over a month. My surgery was
more than 6 hours long because it was actually two surgeries, they removed the
tumor and my lymph nodes. My life was changed forever. Please learn from my
lesson and get screened for malignant melanoma...

Karen Goeller, CSCS threw out the first pitch at the Lakewood BlueClaws on 8/22/09. And guess what... It actually reached home plate, even though she looked like she was doing a floor routine rather than throwing a baseball. Karen shared, "I was surprised that I actually reached home plate because I have not thrown a ball in ages." Karen was there promoting her books and training services.

Karen Goeller has posted a new video on the Handstand Book page that shows a gymnast demonstrating a drill she has required her gymnasts to perform for many years. This drill is in her Handstand Drills and Conditioning Book. The video shows one of Karen Goeller's athletes demonstrating a drill for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. It will help the gymnast become more aware of body tightness and will help improve her upper body strength. This exercise will also train the shoulder muscles for the last portion of the movement performed in the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. Many gymnasts do not train the last portion of the shoulder movement necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. The gymnasts not training the full range of motion often become frustrated when it takes a very long time to perform either skill successfully. Many gymnasts believe that if they continue to attempt either skill, often only reaching horizontal, that they will be able to accomplish the full skill with these attempts. the reality is that they are only practicing half of the range of motion necessary, therefore they are not conditioning the muscles appropriately. The muscles must be trained to perform the movements desired. The drill in this video will help train the final stage of both skills. It is imperative that the gymnast train the entire upper body range of motion in order to successfully perform the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. This will allow a more speedy process with the gymnast's success with these skills. The gymnast in the video performing the drill is a level 5 gymnast. By the time she must perform the cast handstand on her own she will already have developed an awareness of shoulder position and much of the strength necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. There are many other drills and conditioning exercises that should be performed for both the cast handstand and the clear hip handstand, but the drill demonstrated in this video should be at the top of the list because it is very effective. Attention Camp Counselors: Your Campers Will Have Tons of FUN!

Swing for Veterans Program: Attention Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans...
Karen Goeller, creator of Swing Set Fitness wants to thank you for your remarkable service by donating her time, offering FREE Swing Set workouts. She is looking forward to working with injured and non-injured veterans. There are plenty of exercises that can be performed by people with injuries to one area of their body. The non-injured areas of the body can often be exercised without disrupting the injured areas. The swing can support the bodyweight while certain exercises are performed.
For example, the squat exercise can be performed with the swing behind the back so that it is supporting the body weight while performing the exercise. Another example is the double crunch. That one is performed while sitting on top of the swing.
Goeller knows first hand about performing exercise while injured because she has successfully performed many swing workouts with her back injuries. It only took a minute for Jim Milkowski, co-owner of The Training Room, to become hooked on Swing Set Fitness. He became so interested in Swing Set Fitness that he installed swings inside the facility for everyone to use. Within one week, swing exercises have been incorporated into the classes at The Training Room. Now Swing Set Fitness is a year round activity in Avon, NJ. With Swing Set Fitness, there are so many exercises and variations that beginner through advanced fitness enthusiasts can benefit from these exercises. There are swing exercises for legs, chest, abdomen, and other muscle groups that a full body workout can easily be performed. Unfortunately, Roberto passed away last week. We wish his family our most sincere sympathy...
Unfortunately, I have a bit of sad news regarding a highly successful and well respected gymnastics coach, Roberto Pumpido...
I trained my gymnasts in a facility where Roberto coached his team many years ago. His young men were Olympic level gymnasts. Roberto allowed me to observe their training, ask questions, and ultimately learn a great deal. He was very generous with his time and knowledge. I have not seen Roberto for many years, but I was just informed that he is facing serious medical problems. A friend wrote to me that, "Roberto is ill with "B" Cell lymphoma." Roberto has done so much for his athletes and the sport of gymnastics. He has given his life to the sport and now he needs those of us involved in gymnastics to give back to him. People are donating money to help pay for his medical treatment. If each of us can do a little for Roberto that would make a great difference. If you can make a donation, send a get well card, and pray for him during this holiday season that would be helpful.

Fitness Trainer Urges Adults to Maintain Fitness with FAST Workouts
Firefighters, Nurses, Retail Employees, Police Officers, EMT’s, and Sports Coaches are among the adult populations with physical jobs. Unfortunately, adults often under-estimate the strength required for their jobs. Lack of strength to perform a job can increase the risk of injury. The creator of these fitness programs, Karen Goeller, urges adults to achieve and maintain a good fitness level for their jobs and their health.
