Remember to connect with Karen Goeller and Joe Kasper on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 10:00 PM EST. Karen Goeller has posted a new video on the Handstand Book page that shows a gymnast demonstrating a drill she has required her gymnasts to perform for many years. This drill is in her Handstand Drills and Conditioning Book. The video shows one of Karen Goeller's athletes demonstrating a drill for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. It will help the gymnast become more aware of body tightness and will help improve her upper body strength. This exercise will also train the shoulder muscles for the last portion of the movement performed in the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. Many gymnasts do not train the last portion of the shoulder movement necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. The gymnasts not training the full range of motion often become frustrated when it takes a very long time to perform either skill successfully. Many gymnasts believe that if they continue to attempt either skill, often only reaching horizontal, that they will be able to accomplish the full skill with these attempts. the reality is that they are only practicing half of the range of motion necessary, therefore they are not conditioning the muscles appropriately. The muscles must be trained to perform the movements desired. The drill in this video will help train the final stage of both skills. It is imperative that the gymnast train the entire upper body range of motion in order to successfully perform the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. This will allow a more speedy process with the gymnast's success with these skills. The gymnast in the video performing the drill is a level 5 gymnast. By the time she must perform the cast handstand on her own she will already have developed an awareness of shoulder position and much of the strength necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. There are many other drills and conditioning exercises that should be performed for both the cast handstand and the clear hip handstand, but the drill demonstrated in this video should be at the top of the list because it is very effective. There are many other exercises available for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand in the Cast Handstand Training Programs. They can be purchased through the Animated E-Books page on the website, www.GymnasticsStuff.com. Wow... New Product by Gymnastics Stuff™ Sigg Water Bottle with our most popular gymnastics designs! 12/15/08 Roberto Pumpido Unfortunately, Roberto passed away last week. We wish his family our most sincere sympathy... 12/2/08 Unfortunately, I have a bit of sad news regarding a highly successful and well respected gymnastics coach, Roberto Pumpido... I trained my gymnasts in a facility where Roberto coached his team many years ago. His young men were Olympic level gymnasts. Roberto allowed me to observe their training, ask questions, and ultimately learn a great deal. He was very generous with his time and knowledge. I have not seen Roberto for many years, but I was just informed that he is facing serious medical problems. A friend wrote to me that, "Roberto is ill with "B" Cell lymphoma." Roberto has done so much for his athletes and the sport of gymnastics. He has given his life to the sport and now he needs those of us involved in gymnastics to give back to him. People are donating money to help pay for his medical treatment. If each of us can do a little for Roberto that would make a great difference. If you can make a donation, send a get well card, and pray for him during this holiday season that would be helpful. Karen Goeller Technique Magazine... Read Karen Goeller's article, Staying on the Beam. It has been published in the November/December 2008 issue of Technique. Technique is the gymnastics magazine that USA Gymnastics publishes for the professional members. Let us know what you think about the article and let us know how we can help your gymnasts reach their goals. Fitness Trainer Urges Adults to Maintain Fitness with FAST WorkoutsFirefighters, Nurses, Retail Employees, Police Officers, EMT’s, and Sports Coaches are among the adult populations with physical jobs. Unfortunately, adults often under-estimate the strength required for their jobs. Lack of strength to perform a job can increase the risk of injury. The creator of these fitness programs, Karen Goeller, urges adults to achieve and maintain a good fitness level for their jobs and their health. (Karen Goeller is a well-known fitness author and trainer in NJ. She currently trains athletes at Game Shape and at The Training Room). Using weights properly is often a safe and effective method of gaining strength. Goeller states that, “This does not mean that a person must spend several hours training each week.” Goeller’s Legs Plus workouts only take 10-15 minutes each, very little time compared to the amount of time many adults spend with other recreational activities. With the Legs Plus workouts, each leg exercise incorporates an upper body movement. The person performs compound exercises, one after another, throughout the workout. In this way it is similar to many jobs that require the worker to use upper and lower body muscles simultaneously. Anyone who enjoys exercise or physical work would appreciate these workouts. Goeller shares, “They are pretty intense, but so are many of the jobs that adults perform.” Since these workouts are animated e-books the cost is really low, there is no shipping cost, and they can be downloaded immediately after the payment is complete. At only $5.00 each, many people can afford to buy at least one of these training programs. Karen Goeller informed us that, “The introductory prices of 50% off will end on 10-20-08. “ The equipment used in the Legs Plus workouts are dumbbells, medicine ball, and a weight bar. Any enthusiastic adult can get started pretty quickly. Goeller reminds us that everyone should discuss new exercise programs with their doctor. The Legs Plus workouts are just a few of the many fitness programs available for adults through the Gymnastics Stuff™ website. There are also conditioning programs for general fitness, core, speed and agility, gymnastics conditioning, and golf conditioning among others. Information on all of the exercise programs is at http://www.GymnasticsStuff.com/gymnastics_training.htm. And for anyone who prefers printed books there are plenty of them by Karen Goeller at www.GymnasticsBooks.com Gymnastics Stuff™ has added a great strength training program for gymnastics coaches. That's right, we want you to be strong too! The Legs Plus training program was created by an experienced coach for gymnastics coaches. The Legs Plus training program is a time efficient and effective strength training program that is extremely useful to gymnastics coaches. You will gain the strength you need in order to spot your gymnasts, move heavy mats, and get through the long day. As coaches we often under-estimate the strength required for the job. Just like gymnasts, coaches must keep up with conditioning in order to safely spot and reduce the risk of injury. We all know that spotting is a skill that takes time to master, but it is much easier and safer when you are strong and healthy. When the coach is not strong enough to spot there is an increased risk of injury to the coach and gymnast. For safety sake, we must remain strong. Using weights properly is often a safe and effective method of gaining strength. This does not mean that you must spend several hours training each week. This Legs Plus workout only takes 10-20 minutes. That's nothing compared to the amount of time you spend doing so many other things. This is an effective workout. You will not be disappointed! Each leg exercise incorporates an upper body movement so that you are performing several compound exercises, one after another, throughout the workout. In this way it is similar to spotting, using your upper and lower body simultaneously. If you enjoy coaching and spotting your gymnasts you will love this Legs Plus workout! It was created by a coach for coaches. And here is the best part... Since this is an animated e-book the cost is extremely low, there is no shipping cost, and it can be downloaded immediately after your payment is complete. At only $5.00, everyone can afford to buy this training program. The equipment used in this Legs Plus workout is dumbbells, a medicine ball, and a weight bar or sandbag.
