Reader Jennifer Dunn stated, "Karen's story will move and inspire you. If you are looking to read about an incredible journey of tenacity and the will of a spirit to live and succeed, you need to read her story. It will reinvigorate you on life. Why can a whale lift it's own body out of the water yet a single human cannot? Well I've heard it said because no one told it, it can't. Despite being told by many that she couldn't, Karen DID -- I say its because she never gave up or accepted a set of cards she couldn't live with. Her journey will touch you -- it is one that should not be missed. Highly recommend!"

For the 10th Anniversary Karen Goeller has released her first gymnastics drills and conditioning book in e-book format!!! Get the gymnastics drills and conditioning e-book here... http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/gymnastics-drills-and-conditioning-exercises/14595539
This gymnastics drills and conditioning book has remained Karen Goeller's most popular gymnastics book for the past ten years. It was written to help gymnastics coaches teach their gymnasts specific skills for better performance, but gymnasts often use this book at home to ensure proper training and fitness enthusiasts love this book for the strength and core exercises. The first edition was used by Greg Glassman to write the CrossFit program. CrossFit is now a worldwide phenomena. So check out this book now! http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/gymnastics-drills-and-conditioning-exercises/14595539
Why did Karen Goeller write her first book? Karen Goeller was involved in an accident in 2000 and suffered permanent spinal damage. (It was not a gymnastics-related accident.) She stopped coaching gymnastics as she knew it and left her advertising job with Gold's Gym. Desperate to remain involved in gymnastics and fitness, Karen turned to writing. "I felt like I had a ton of information in my head that was not being used." Goeller then compared the knowledge in her head to "an expensive item in your house that just collects dust because no one is using it." Karen shared, "I was so thankful as a young coach to the more experienced coaches who helped me throughout the years. I knew in 2001 that it was the perfect time to pass on this knowledge. Writing books was the perfect avenue to pass on this information." For information on the author, Karen Goeller...http://www.gymnasticsstuff.com/AboutAuthor.htm

A note from Karen
Goeller: Get screened for skin cancer... Melanoma is an epidemic. One person
dies every hour from melanoma. Almost 70,000 Americans will be
diagnosed and 8,700 will die from the disease this year. This cancer starts out
on the skin, but can spread throughout the body if not removed quickly. It is
called MALIGNANT Melanoma for a reason... I literally almost died
of this cancer in 1991. To give an example of why people do not take this
seriously, the mole on my leg was just under 1/4 inch in diameter. I thought it
was a simple office procedure so I put it off for over a month. My surgery was
more than 6 hours long because it was actually two surgeries, they removed the
tumor and my lymph nodes. My life was changed forever. Please learn from my
lesson and get screened for malignant melanoma...

Karen Goeller has posted a new video on the Handstand Book page that shows a gymnast demonstrating a drill she has required her gymnasts to perform for many years. This drill is in her Handstand Drills and Conditioning Book. The video shows one of Karen Goeller's athletes demonstrating a drill for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. It will help the gymnast become more aware of body tightness and will help improve her upper body strength. This exercise will also train the shoulder muscles for the last portion of the movement performed in the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. Many gymnasts do not train the last portion of the shoulder movement necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. The gymnasts not training the full range of motion often become frustrated when it takes a very long time to perform either skill successfully. Many gymnasts believe that if they continue to attempt either skill, often only reaching horizontal, that they will be able to accomplish the full skill with these attempts. the reality is that they are only practicing half of the range of motion necessary, therefore they are not conditioning the muscles appropriately. The muscles must be trained to perform the movements desired. The drill in this video will help train the final stage of both skills. It is imperative that the gymnast train the entire upper body range of motion in order to successfully perform the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. This will allow a more speedy process with the gymnast's success with these skills. The gymnast in the video performing the drill is a level 5 gymnast. By the time she must perform the cast handstand on her own she will already have developed an awareness of shoulder position and much of the strength necessary for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand. There are many other drills and conditioning exercises that should be performed for both the cast handstand and the clear hip handstand, but the drill demonstrated in this video should be at the top of the list because it is very effective. There are many other exercises available for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand in the Cast Handstand Training Programs. They can be purchased through the Animated E-Books page on the website, www.GymnasticsStuff.com.

Swing for Veterans Program: Attention Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans...
Karen Goeller, creator of Swing Set Fitness wants to thank you for your remarkable service by donating her time, offering FREE Swing Set workouts. She is looking forward to working with injured and non-injured veterans. There are plenty of exercises that can be performed by people with injuries to one area of their body. The non-injured areas of the body can often be exercised without disrupting the injured areas. The swing can support the bodyweight while certain exercises are performed.
For example, the squat exercise can be performed with the swing behind the back so that it is supporting the body weight while performing the exercise. Another example is the double crunch. That one is performed while sitting on top of the swing.
Goeller knows first hand about performing exercise while injured because she has successfully performed many swing workouts with her back injuries. She states that she was "surprised at how many exercises she could perform." So allow her to help you by participating in her Swing for Veterans Program. She will also offer help to the spouses of veterans because the couple can exercise together.
We sincerely thank you for your service and hope that you have a happy and healthy New Year!!!

12/15/08 Roberto Pumpido
Unfortunately, Roberto passed away last week. We wish his family our most sincere sympathy...
Unfortunately, I have a bit of sad news regarding a highly successful and well respected gymnastics coach, Roberto Pumpido...
I trained my gymnasts in a facility where Roberto coached his team many years ago. His young men were Olympic level gymnasts. Roberto allowed me to observe their training, ask questions, and ultimately learn a great deal. He was very generous with his time and knowledge. I have not seen Roberto for many years, but I was just informed that he is facing serious medical problems. A friend wrote to me that, "Roberto is ill with "B" Cell lymphoma." Roberto has done so much for his athletes and the sport of gymnastics. He has given his life to the sport and now he needs those of us involved in gymnastics to give back to him. People are donating money to help pay for his medical treatment. If each of us can do a little for Roberto that would make a great difference. If you can make a donation, send a get well card, and pray for him during this holiday season that would be helpful.
Read Karen Goeller's article, Staying on the Beam. It has been published in the November/December 2008 issue of Technique. Technique is the gymnastics magazine that USA Gymnastics publishes for the professional members. Fitness Trainer Urges Adults to Maintain Fitness with FAST Workouts
Firefighters, Nurses, Retail Employees, Police Officers, EMT’s, and Sports Coaches are among the adult populations with physical jobs. Unfortunately, adults often under-estimate the strength required for their jobs. Lack of strength to perform a job can increase the risk of injury. The creator of these fitness programs, Karen Goeller, urges adults to achieve and maintain a good fitness level for their jobs and their health. (Karen Goeller is a well-known fitness author and trainer in NJ. She currently trains athletes at Game Shape and at The Training Room). Using weights properly is often a safe and effective method of gaining strength. Goeller states that, “This does not mean that a person must spend several hours training each week.” Goeller’s Legs Plus workouts only take 10-15 minutes each, very little time compared to the amount of time many adults spend with other recreational activities. With the Legs Plus workouts, each leg exercise incorporates an upper body movement. The person performs compound exercises, one after another, throughout the workout. In this way it is similar to many jobs that require the worker to use upper and lower body muscles simultaneously. Anyone who enjoys exercise or physical work would appreciate these workouts. Goeller shares, “They are pretty intense, but so are many of the jobs that adults perform.” Since these workouts are animated e-books the cost is really low, there is no shipping cost, and they can be downloaded immediately after the payment is complete. At only $5.00 each, many people can afford to buy at least one of these training programs. Karen Goeller informed us that, “The introductory prices of 50% off will end on 10-20-08. “ The equipment used in the Legs Plus workouts are dumbbells, medicine ball, and a weight bar. Any enthusiastic adult can get started pretty quickly. Goeller reminds us that everyone should discuss new exercise programs with their doctor.
The Legs Plus workouts are just a few of the many fitness programs available for adults through the Gymnastics Stuff™ website. There are also conditioning programs for general fitness, core, speed and agility, gymnastics conditioning, and golf conditioning among others. Information on all of the exercise programs is at http://www.GymnasticsStuff.com/gymnastics_training.htm. And for anyone who prefers printed books there are plenty of them by Karen Goeller at www.GymnasticsBooks.com
Gymnastics Stuff™ has added a great strength training program for gymnastics coaches. That's right, we want you to be strong too!
The Legs Plus training program was created by an experienced coach for gymnastics coaches. The Legs Plus training program is a time efficient and effective strength training program that is extremely useful to gymnastics coaches. You will gain the strength you need in order to spot your gymnasts, move heavy mats, and get through the long day. As coaches we often under-estimate the strength required for the job. Just like gymnasts, coaches must keep up with conditioning in order to safely spot and reduce the risk of injury. We all know that spotting is a skill that takes time to master, but it is much easier and safer when you are strong and healthy. When the coach is not strong enough to spot there is an increased risk of injury to the coach and gymnast. For safety sake, we must remain strong. Using weights properly is often a safe and effective method of gaining strength. This does not mean that you must spend several hours training each week. This Legs Plus workout only takes 10-20 minutes. That's nothing compared to the amount of time you spend doing so many other things. This is an effective workout. You will not be disappointed! Each leg exercise incorporates an upper body movement so that you are performing several compound exercises, one after another, throughout the workout. In this way it is similar to spotting, using your upper and lower body simultaneously. If you enjoy coaching and spotting your gymnasts you will love this Legs Plus workout! It was created by a coach for coaches. And here is the best part... Since this is an animated e-book the cost is extremely low, there is no shipping cost, and it can be downloaded immediately after your payment is complete. At only $5.00, everyone can afford to buy this training program. The equipment used in this Legs Plus workout is dumbbells, a medicine ball, and a weight bar or sandbag. Download Legs Plus now and get started today! This is one of many fitness programs available for adults through the Gymnastics Stuff™ website. While you are on the website you can view the entire list of animated e-books. There are conditioning programs for general fitness, core, speed and agility, gymnastics conditioning, and golf conditioning among others. The owners of Gymnastics Stuff™ are sure you will find something useful for yourself and your athletes. This Legs Plus training program was created by a very experienced gymnastics coach and fitness trainer, Karen Goeller. She has written numerous gymnastics books, fitness books, training programs, and articles on many topics. Her articles have been published on many websites, in USA Gymnastics Technique Magazine, and in Cheer Coach and Advisor Magazine. She has educated thousands in the gymnastics and fitness communities. Just in time for your new level 6, 7, and 8 gymnasts who need more strength. The cast handstand is a strength and technique skill. Without both, your gymnast will struggle while attempting to perform the cast handstand. And great news... these workouts will help your gymnasts with a clear hip to handstand too!
The new Cast Handstand Programs target the specific muscles used for the cast handstand and clear hip handstand including the shoulder, chest, and core muscles responsible for the correct body shape and arm motion to lift the gymnast up into the handstand. Many of the exercises involve the use of a medicine ball, a stability ball or octagon, fitness bands, and a pull up bar. Some of the excises may be familiar, but there should be many that you have not used with your athletes. You will be surprised at the progress your athletes make once they have enough strength for these two skills. Besides helping with the cast handstand and clear hip handstand, these conditioning exercises will help with any skill that requires the same muscle movements as the cast handstand.
